Chaukori - Bageshwar: Beautiful Kumaon towns in the lap of Himalayas

Month of Visit: April, 2022

Chaukori is a small town situated in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. The town is shaped like a bowl and hence the name “Chaukori”. The place offers a picturesque view of the Western Himalayan range and the lush green forests of oaks, pines surrounding the region. From here you can see the gorgeous snowy peaks of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and the Panchchuli group

Bageshwar town is situated at the confluence of Saryu and Gomati rivers. The place is of religious and historical importance. Bageshwar is mentioned in various Puranas and is associated with Lord Shiva. Historically Bageshwar was a famous trade mart between Kumaon and Tibet and Bhotia traders used to come here to barter Tibetan wool, salt, borax in exchange for local produce products like carpets. It is surrounded by the mountains of Nileshwar and Bhileshwar.

I also covered Baijnath in this trip as it is near Bageshwar. Baijnath is a small town in Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand and situated on the banks of river Gomati. Earlier known as “Kartikeyapura” Baijnath was the capital of the Katyuri Dynasty which ruled the Kumaon region between the 7th century to the 12th century AD.

In this guide, I have covered places you can visit in Chaukori, Bageshwar and Baijnath, route details, accommodation and food, best time to visit and some other important information.

With more and more tourists visiting these places it is important to be a responsible citizen so

  • Travel Responsibly

  • Carry garbage bags with you where you can put your wastes and later dump them in a dustbin

  • Do not play loud music while you drive or during the trek. It disturbs the peace of the people and animals there
