Champawat - Lohaghat: The Mystical and Mythical Towns of Kumaon

Month of Visit: March, 2022

Champawat is a historic town in the state of Uttarakhand which was the capital of the Chand dynasty - rulers of Kumaon (10th - 16th century). As per Indian mythology, it is believed that Lord Vishnu appeared here in Kurmavtar form (Turtle incarnation). The place is also famous for its ancient temples which depict Kumaon architecture.

Lohaghat is a small town located on the banks of river Lohawati and near Champawat. It served as the cultural capital of the Chand dynasty and is surrounded by tall deodar trees. If the weather is clear then you can also witness the snow-capped Himalayan peaks from here.

Lohaghat and Champawat are not proper tourist places and are less commercialized. At Lohaghat you will feel closer to nature and at peace. There are places nearby Champawat and Lohaghat which are of historical and mythological importance and can be visited.

In this guide, I have covered places you can visit in Champawat and Lohaghat, route details, accommodation and food, the best time to visit and some other important information.

With more and more tourists visiting these places it is important to be a responsible citizen so

  • Travel Responsibly

  • Carry garbage bags with you where you can put your wastes and later dump them in a dustbin

  • Do not play loud music while you drive or during the trek. It disturbs the peace of the people and animals there
